Friesland is a province in the Netherlands with its own language and flag. The Frisians are very proud of their flag and you will find this flag everywhere you go in Friesland. The pattern of this beautiful flag is also to be found on ceramics, clothes and other merchandise.

Many tourists who see the Frisian flag for the first time think the flag consists of hearts. From a distance it may look like hearts. However, this is not the case, if you look closely you will see they are red seeblatts (or pompeblêden, as they are called in Friesland).

In days gone by, there used to be more heart shaped items, for instance in the 16th century weapon of Groninger Ommelanden.
